Major road improvements for Cathedral Way in Chichester to start this week

Major road improvements for Cathedral Way in Chichester to start in January

Driving to the Tesco Extra superstore in Chichester will become quicker and easier next year, as West Sussex County Council is to carry out a major road improvement scheme along Cathedral Way and Fishbourne Road East in January 2015.

Traffic leaving the A27 onto Cathedral Way will have a dedicated left hand lane, feeding into Fishbourne Road East, taking them to the Tesco store.

And traffic which currently gets stuck exiting Fishbourne Road East will have a dedicated left hand lane onto Cathedral Way.

A new pedestrian footway along Fishbourne Road East will also be built.

The project is part of a planning agreement the County Council had with Tesco when the supermarket was extended to become a Tesco Extra.

The work is anticipated to be finished by late April.

Disruption is expected, but shoppers will still be able to access the Tesco Extra throughout the works.

Cathedral Way will stay open throughout the duration – except for 10 nights across the 14-week period– but the carriageway will have to be narrowed to keep the workforce safe.

Work during daytime hours will take place between 7.30am and 5.00pm.

Motorists are advised to find alternative routes during peak hours to avoid congestion.

County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, Pieter Montyn, said: “As with all large scale works of this nature, there will be short term pain for long term gain.

“We have worked with Tesco to schedule the works so it can avoid the busy Christmas period.

“We apologise in advance for any inconvenience this work will cause in the New Year – and we ask people to find alternative routes to this area if they can.

“However once finished, it will improve the flow of traffic around Cathedral Way and Fishbourne Road East, and make it easier to access the Tesco superstore.”

The scheme will cost £280,000, which is being met by £150,000 from the Tesco expansion, with the remainder from other development money within the Chichester district.
